About

Back in Junior High ('94) Jurassic Park was a all the rage; my biology class had a bunch of related projects to choose from; one of those was a terrarium.  So I went to a local greenhouse, Jamaican Gardens in Morton Grove (now condos or something), I was blown away by the place.  They had a tropical garden inside with a waterfall.  Everything about this place was great.  The guy who helped me was a horticulturist.  I was now hooked.

Fast forward to today and I find myself as a Horticultural Soil Scientist.  I study growing media, soil amendments, soilless substrate....Dirt.  Yes I said dirt, I can use the "D" word because I have a profound appreciation for the complexities and importance of dirt.  Some may consider themselves "plant people," but really without good dirt, you can't get much to grow.

While my career has narrowed my focus a bit, I still continue to explore every facet of this field.  During my journey from Junior High until now I have had experiences in most areas of horticulture.  From plant biochemistry to floral design; Oenology/Viticulture(wine and grapes) to hydroponic horseradish; plant breeding to soil organic matter.

This is my attempt to share what interests me in horticulture from the art, science and business side.

I hope you read what I share, understand what I am trying to say, and take something away from it, even if it is just a fun fact for a cocktail party. Do people still have those Skirvin?

Your Horticulturist.
